What friends and family say: Non-conformist, genuine, has a thirst for knowledge, determined, passionate, reality checker and cusses like a sailor.
There are two things at the heart of what I do:
- Understanding that the most complete healing of wounds involves both body and mind–the bodymind.
- Empowering people to become their own authority and take action–especially with their health.
My What page has info about bodymind healing. As for authority: If you’ve lost authority over your body, time, relationships or anything important to you, I want you to have the knowledge and skills to get it back. Medication-free trauma recovery may be my specialty, but I want to help you rise above your back pain or chronic inflammation or bad relationship or poor upbringing or a crappy healthcare system or whatever is keeping you from feeling whole, content and well.
I’m not just trauma-informed; I’m trauma-experienced. After years in relationship with corporate, industrialized medicine (even employed by a healthcare system), I was harmed as a patient and lost two family members to medical error and poor care. Despite some amazing success and invaluable tools, our mainstream medical system offers health repair, not health care and relying only on this system often brings disappointment—especially with mental health or chronic illness. Experiencing this first hand, I was deeply motivated to find a better way.
I had long been interested in traditional and body-based practices, but now I dove deep. It sucked. It was hard. It hurt. And it worked. My recent trauma healed and several old injuries and issues improved—from my spine to sleep problems to self-sabotaging behavior. Now I again find myself deeply motivated; this time to share these practices.
As an interdisciplinarian, I’m always looking to expand my knowledge. Training and research are fun for me–I’m a nerd and biology is one of my favorite subjects. I ask my clients to educate themselves to some degree–because knowledge is power. I also ask clients to use their body with intention–not to “work out,” but to use movement as medicine. I began strength training in 1990, asana in 1999 and Pilates in 2014. I’ve also dabbled in rockclimbing, cycling and bellydance.
I value “enough,” using your life for what’s important, self-sufficiency (to a fault at times), questioning authority (also to a fault), connection with nature and standing up for underdogs. I love bad weather and don’t like olives.
